Josh Burns is the Marketing Manager at Think Digital & Social Church Academy. He has several years of experience in church communications and social media. He also has a passion to see these new mediums implemented within the church in order to better communicate the gospel. I am currently serving as the Marketing Manager at Think Digital & Social Church Academy, a community that is committed to bringing you the best coaching, resources, and case studies on how to reach more people with the gospel through your church’s social media presence. I believe in order to better reach the people for the kingdom we must use the communication tools of this culture. That means social media. So this is my job, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
So how did I get started?
I started shooting and editing video when I was in middle school. I used a handycam and Windows Movie Maker (everyone has to start somewhere). From there I was enamored with what I could do with technology. With some help from a high school mentor, I quickly realized the potential for the use of technology to reach people with the gospel.
Throughout my student years I volunteered in my youth group at Church (Calvary Baptist Church), overseeing audio & video, and creating videos with friends for different youth group events.
All while this is happening I decided to pursue my other passion in life, sports. I was studying Sports Ministry at Moody Bible Institute. Sports have always been a huge part of my life. From the age of 4 I have played organized soccer, and I played at Moody for 4 years. I have always had these two passions in my life (sports & media), and it has always been a struggle to balance them. I realized about 3 years into my career at Moody that I needed to pursue my passion for church communications more.
While serving at Calvary I saw much room for growth and improvement. This caused me to write my first communications proposal and strategy for Calvary. Little did I know this would lead to them hiring for a summer to do communications consultant work, which actually spring-boarded me to where I am today. I was able to gain quite a bit of knowledge and insight into what it takes to actually work in a church.
Following that summer I came back to Chicago reenergized and more equipped to pursue church communications as a career. I had attended Park Community Church for 3 years and served as a media volunteer there. Through some connections with Tim Schraeder, God blessed me with a job at Park upon graduation from Moody.
I was on staff for 4 years at Park, executing their communications and social media. I learned so much in those 4 years, and as I grew in my knowledge and leadership I felt the call to share that experience with other churches.
And that brings me to today. I am now the Marketing Manager at Think Digital & Social Church Academy. I’m excited to have partnered with Justin Wise to create Social Church Academy, a monthly membership program of coaching, resources, and case studies for a community of church communicators and pastors.
My wife and I currently live in Chicago.
I love riding my bike along lakeshore, drinking tea and coffee with friends, and relaxing with a good episode of Mad Men.
