Echo 11 :: Kyle Steed – I Am Not A Trend

Kyle Steed works on the UX team at Fellowship Technologies helping build and design software that serves the Body of Christ.

He also do freelance work in my spare time. He really enjoys getting to pick who he works for on the side as it allows him to follow more creative endeavors. He has had the pleasure of working with Enter The Worship Circle, The Blackthorn Project, May, LIFT UX and FUEL just to name a few.

What is a trend?

  • It makes me sad that Christians will ripoff the world and call it design.
    • “I Like Jesus” – Facebook, “Holy Depot” “The Light” – twilight
  • Definition of “trend” – A general direction in which something is developing or changing
  • Trends aren’t inherently evil
  • I’ve spent most of my life caring too much what you think and not enough what God thinks
  • We have for too long defined ourselves by what we do and not who we are

How do we define ourselves?

  • money, influence, love, friends, legacy, acceptance, recognition
  • So God created mankind in his own image
  • This is the foundation of who we are
  • What we tell ourselves…
    • I can never be as good as…
    • I don’t think my work is as good as…
    • I just want to give up
  • One of the best ways I know how to find myself is to disconnect from everything
  • Here are some things to try…
    • Stop looking for inspiration online
    • Pray before you work
      • Stop and really focus on the Lord and what creativity He has for me
    • Encourage others – to put courage in someone else

What the Word says…

  • “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
    • The only way to measure up is to be hidden in him.
    • I’ve stopped the rat race and God is still faithful
  • “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.”
    • If we’re each doing what we were made to do and who we were made to be then that is awesome.

Until we recognize our identity we will never lead the way.

We should be setting the trend for the world to follow us.

Keep up the good work.

How do you deal with leadership who wants something designed just like something else out there?

  • Ask them what they like about that, and see how you can make it your own.

How long have you been a believer? And how long have you been illustrating professionally?

  • I’ve been illustrating professionally for a couple years.
  • I’ve been a believer since 2003.

Since you don’t look for inspiration online, where do you look for inspiration?

  • This may sound cliche, but I go outside and look at God’s creation.

Do you feel like your process is different when you’re doing work for a paid client or personal work?

  • I try not to differentiate.

What are you excited about?

  • I’m excited about you. haha
  • but seriously, I’m excited about what the Lord is doing. This is a time that Christian designers are coming up and doing good work.

How do you do your drawings?

  • I start with a drawing, then scan it into illustrator, and then spend hours getting the points just right.

“I hate design by committee” – Kyle Steed

In design how do you deal with resistance?

  • Patience.
  • Putting it away for a while.
  • Take time away from it for a while.
  • When I get stuck, I go to the bathroom and my head just totally clears.

As a creative, how do you reconcile working in an office?

  • I keep a sketchbook at my desk. Keep it on you at all times.
  • Meetings are a great time to sketch.

What are some artists that inspire you?

  • Norman Rockwell

What do you love the most, and hate the most about your job?

  • I love the most…the people I work with.
  • I hate the most…going to a cubicle.
