Passion 2011 :: Breakout 2 :: Francis Chan

Francis Chan (born 1967) is an American preacher. He is the former teaching pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, CA, a Christian church he and his wife started in 1994. He is also the Founder and Chancellor of Eternity Bible College and author of the best-selling book, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God. He released his second book Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit in August 2009.

“Have you ever had the thought that you are the only human being on earth, and everyone else is a machine, and God is just testing me to see how I am going to live.”

  • God is the I AM, not I will, not I was, he is the I AM, in the present.
  • Before we start wondering what the future of the church is going look like, we must start with what we know. If He has told us something, then we must obey that first.
  • What I do know, has to do with this very moment RIGHT NOW.
  • He wants us as His children to so deeply love Him. Look at me as your brother, your literal brother, not the speaker, not a pastor, or someone set apart, but my brother who is a sinner, but is saved by Christ.
  • We’re supposed to live like family.
  • 1 John 4:12 – No one has ever seen God, if we love on another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.
    • This world hasn’t seen God, but if we would love one another, then He will abide in us.
    • Unbelievers should be able to walk into our gathering, wherever that may be, and they should see so much love, and get a glimpse of God by the way we love each other.
    • The incarnational duties have been passed onto us as the church.
    • When unbelievers walk into a church gathering, do they see that kind of love?
  • The second question I ask myself before I get up and preach is, “Do I genuinely love these people?”
  • If we can actually follow through with this in our actions then revival can happen.
  • The church doesn’t have to be the way it has always been. I love the church. I grew up in the church.
    • Don’t believe everything that you read. There are have been articles written about my life that make it sound like I’m angry at the church. That is not true. I’m still very involved with my church. I just wanted to leave and learn from people in other countries, and how they are doing their walks with God. It has been said that I am moving to China. No, I just went on a trip to learn from these people, and see how we can do that here.
  • Now the challenge is to find some of those kind of people, and see how we can live like a family.
  • That is what Passion is about. You’re not scared to worship in this room, because you’re side by side with other brothers and sisters, but how do we take that outside.
  • At the core of what God is calling me to is discipleship.
    • Don’t think too much future, God will take care of that.
    • Everyone in this room should be making disciples.
    • There is a lot of freedom in how we do it, as long as its the mission of your life.
    • Matthew 28:18-20 – All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me, and I’m telling you to go and make disciples of nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
    • So many people have memorized, and then I ask, “how many people have made disciples?”
    • If I tell my daughter to go clean her room, she doesn’t come back to me later and say, “daddy, I memorized what you said.” And I don’t say, “o good job honey.”
    • That doesn’t fly with me, I want to walk to her room, and see order there.
    • But we do the same thing in our churches. We memorize stuff, but do we ever ask, “have you ever actually made a disciple?”
    • The book “When Helping Hurts” – A lot of times we want to keep giving money to the poor, but that isn’t enough. We need to help them out of the crisis, and then teach them live on their own, and sustain themselves.
      • When I read that book, the first thing I thought about was the church in America. We just keep feeding, and feeding people, and listening, and soaking in, rather than really challenging you. You are supposed to step up. You are supposed to be making your own disciples now.
      • How long have you been in the church, and you still aren’t reproducing?
      • That was the first thing I learned in youth group from my youth pastor. He told me to go into that campus and reproduce, because he couldn’t relate to them.
  • (Francis Chan literally just forgot his age) LOL!
  • (Francis is now literally rapping on stage…video will be posted) :)
  • You as a college student are growing up in a really weird generation. It used to be that when we would speak it would stay in that room. But now everything is going out everywhere. Twitter, Facebook, blogs. But our prayer is that we would just be who God has called us to say, and just be who He has called me to be.
  • 2 Timothy 4 – It is the Apostle Paul’s last words. I pray that this encapsulates my life.
    • I am hoping for that day when I finish the race for God.
    • The only way the church is going to change is if you as an individual decide to make disciples.
    • As you reproduce yourself that way, don’t worry about creating a giant movement, just do it.
    • Just give it a shot, and don’t regret it. If you don’t do it, then you will regret it.
    • In our churches we don’t take it in order to pass it on. We just absorb and take it in for ourselves.
  • “Although I consider myself pretty secure in my relationship with God, I have to confess, I love when people like me. Ever since I was in high school, I loved to be the popular guy. And then I read the Word of God, and think about the popular prophets of that time. Paul’s rejection. Jesus’ rejection. Jeremiah. Ezekiel. Keep doing it even though it becomes unpopular.”
  • I learned under KP Johannan in India. He has led over 2 million people to the Lord. They plant 13 churches per day. The thing I got from him, was that he loves me. He said to me, “Francis, I pray for you everyday. In fact I pray for you 3 times per day.” Now that is humbling. Why do you find time to pray for me? “I believe God wants to do something through you, if you are willing to be lonely. Are you willing to be lonely? The moment you start caring about what everyone else thinks that is the moment you will have nothing else to say that is worth listening to. Don’t look at me, because right now I’m popular and it is easy to follow someone who is popular. There will come a time when people will not put up with what we are talking about.”
  • I don’t know what the church is going look like in the future, but i think God wants us to pray for each other, and love each other, and disciple others.
  • Pray for each other’s boldness. It is not that you don’t know enough, it is just that you are scared.
