My Biggest Challenge as a Social Media Director

I was once asked by someone, “What has been your biggest challenge so far in your role at Park?” The question took me off guard. Usually people will ask, what I enjoy most about my job? Or what projects am I currently working on? But I’m not sure if I had ever been asked what my biggest challenge was. I responded with, “Everything is going great! I haven’t really encountered any big challenges.” Of course that was an absolute lie. I had definitely encountered challenges, almost on a daily basis.

So what is my biggest challenge as a social media director?
Some would say that convincing their leadership to use social media is their biggest challenge.
Some would say that finding enough content to post throughout the week is their biggest challenge.

I would say that my biggest challenge is keeping up with our online community throughout the week. What is interesting about our roles as church communicators and social media directors is that the internet never turns off. So we have to learn how to manage our online communities throughout the week without letting it rule our lives. If I wanted to, I could probably be checking notifications on our Facebook Page every hour, but I know that wouldn’t be a good use of my time.

time management

How have I faced this challenge?
It really comes down to simple time management. Though that’s easier said than done. After I have scheduled out the week on social media, then I have to schedule times throughout the day to check notifications for Facebook and Twitter. Otherwise I’m just constantly checking these pages and it just turns into a waste of time.

If you don’t schedule time to check these pages, then you’ll just end up interrupting your productivity throughout the day. And we all know that those 30 second Facebook Page check-ins can very easily turn into 10 minutes of just scrolling through the newsfeed.

That has been one of my biggest challenges as of late. There are always others that pop up, but this seems to be one that is the most consistent.

Challenges are good though. I’ve learned that if I’m not encountering challenges then I’m not growing.
