How to Avoid Downward Spiral

  • The reality about leadership like vision-casting and other things, but then something happens, and we have to go out there and do it.
  • Leadership ultimately comes down to you doing something.
  • As leaders, you are people that take charge, and you do stuff.
  • Leaders don’t blame. They take the stewardship that God has given them, and they exert their energy in that space to lead people.
  • The hardest thing that leaders have to be in charge of is him or herself.
  • Some leaders get results and some of them don’t.
  • Some leaders who start to get results, then start to downward spiral because it becomes difficult to lead themselves.
  • How does a downward spiral of a leader happen?
  • If you haven’t experienced a downward spiral yet, just keep succeeding, because it’ll happen eventually.
  • Leaders think, feel, and behave differently from the ones who experience a downward spiral.
  • If you have a choice between people who can’t, but believe they can, and those who can, but believe they can’t, the former will win every time.
  • The biggest factor of whether you will get from here to there, is if you believe it can happen.
  • Eventually a leader will realize that they’re out of control of the circumstances around them, then they will spiral.
  • Eventually you will find yourself in a situation where you’ll be affected by something out of your control.
  • What happens to the brain when you find yourself in a situation that you can’t control?
  • The brain begins to change when you’re in a situation that you can’t control.
  • The brain changes in the ways that it interprets the things around you.
  • The brain begins to interpret this situation in a personal way.
  • Every leader does stuff that doesn’t work, but the optimists don’t let it bother them because they don’t take it personally.
  • In a situation that is out of your control, the brain begins to take it personally.
  • In a situation out of your control, the brain begins to get pervasive.
  • This is when the spiral begins to happen.
  • In a situation out of your control, the brain believes this is permanent.
  • But there is a way out of this downward spiral.
  • Science and the Bible always agree in a place called reality.
  • When you’re experiencing something negative, you eventually stop doing the things you’re able to do.
  • So we have to reverse the three P’s.
  • I have people write down the negative thoughts, then dispute it.
  • There’s a difference between your brain and your mind.
  • Your brain can send off signals that have nothing to do with reality.
  • When you begin to look at the whole picture, life changes.
  • Your life is a movie, not a scene.
  • Do something to get back in control.
  • Draw two columns: Things you can control, and things you can’t control.
  • The people who thrive create a list of things they can absolutely do, and forget about the things out of their control.
  • Everyone has control of something. Focus on that, and forget about the rest.
  • Your brain will turn into a cest pool if you focus on things out of your control.
  • Your brain runs on three things, oxygen, glucose, and relationship.
  • The opposite of bad is not good. The opposite of bad is love.
  • 1. Log and Dispute.
  • 2. Control
  • 3. Connect
  • When you’re going from here to there and you feel the spiral starting, just connect with someone and you’ll begin to change.
  • A can-do attitude is something that will give you confidence. Find a way!
  • God wants you to have a ‘find a way’ attitude!
