Listen to God’s Call

  • Interview with Mark Burnett and Bill Hybels
  • At Willow I’ve always tried to remind people that they don’t have to be a pastor to make a difference. You can do something extraordinary right where you are.
  • Question: Your business in the U.S. started by selling t-shirts on the beach.
  • Answer: There are so many open doors in America. So I started a business selling t-shirts. Americans will give you a chance. This is a place where anyone can have an idea and take action.
  • Question: You said, when you first started in television, people didn’t like your ideas. How did you frame up all of this opposition and push through it?
  • Answer: In business, there are lots of “No’s”. But all I hear is “N-O” “Next Opportunity.”
  • Why did I do the Bible? Because it was a calling from God. When God calls you though, you actually have to get your ass off the couch and do something.
  • Question: After you made the decision to actually go through with the Bible series, you were a bit down on yourselves. What was going on there?
  • Answer: We were feeling in the secular media, a little bit of an attack. We weren’t surprised by that, but I got a bit defensive. Bill Hybels turned to me and said, “Stop playing defensively, and start offensively. Stop apologizing. Go forward.”
  • That changed everything that day. It was the best advice.
  • Question: How do you describe the success of the Bible series?
  • Answer: It’s not about us. This is completely and utterly the Holy Spirit.
  • This is a nation that is absolutely built on the Bible and our faith. We came along with the Bible series at the right time in our nation’s history.
  • This is global though. Yes, it did great in America, but it beat hockey in Canada. It also went #1 in Spain, and Portugal.
  • Question: One of your deeply held leadership values is, “Choose your companions before you choose your road.”
  • Answer: In building teams, you have to empower great leaders. Don’t keep people around who are energy-suckers.
  • When dealing with the wrong people, you might as well pull the entire plug out and drain all of the energy.
  • Question: You said you always team up creative people with finance people, and force them to work together. Why?
  • Answer: They can’t win without each other. I encourage them to work together. They need to co-exist and work together.
  • If the person at the top isn’t wise enough or courageous enough to give responsibility to other areas, it won’t work.
  • What’s more annoying than hiring someone and then doing their job for them?!
  • Question: If you have a creative team, and you’re going to allow them to dream, do you allow them to dream free with no budgetary constraints? Or do you give them a budget first and then tell them to dream within the budget?
  • Answer: If someone came to me with an idea and no idea of a budget, then I’d think they’re crazy. We need to know how long it’s going to take to make it, and how much it’s going to cost.
  • Making Christian shows or movies doesn’t give you the permission to make it crappy.
