Band of Brothers :: Monday Wake Up

It’s a rare thing when you find yourself surrounded by friends who are going to be there for life. We may be spread out all over the world, but to know that they are always going to be there, that is truly amazing. That was the theme of my weekend. I became friends with a group of men during my time in college, and we have called ourselves a ‘Brand of Brothers.’

We’re all graduated now, and in some part of the world doing great work, but we have committed to stay in touch. But even more than that, we have committed to gather for one weekend every year to slow down from normal life, and to catch up with one another, encourage each other, and celebrate the ways that God is using us.

Celebrating with Victor at Tedx Windy City!

This past weekend was Brand of Brothers weekend, and it was amazing. We rented a condo in the city, slept on couches and air mattresses, and shared meals together all weekend. This being the second year that we have gathered since we have been out of college, it was awesome to see how much each of us has grown in different ways from the year before. God has put each of us on different journeys, but we have a common bond that others might not understand at first glance.

The experiences that we have shared together are ones that we will never forget, and ones that anyone else just wouldn’t quite understand. To be able to sit around a table with men for hours and just recount different experiences from our past together is quite a unique opportunity, and one that I am very grateful to have.

But what makes us especially different though is that we don’t just dwell on the past, we look forward to the future. We each went around the table this past weekend and shared what we had learned from the past year, but more importantly, how those learns were going to shape us and move us going forward. We asked questions like, “What does the next year hold?” and “What big decisions do you need to make in the next year?” and “How can we be praying for you in the next year?” To have men in my life that will not only recount the past, but be committed to our friendship in the future is amazing.

Also, we had the amazing opportunity this past weekend to celebrate the leaps that one of our brothers has been taking for the past year, and how that leap is launching him into the future. His name is Victor, and if his name wasn’t awesome enough, he’s starting a freaking school. He spoke at the Tedx Windy City Conference this past weekend, where he shared his experiences of the past year, and he officially launched his Experience Institute. You can follow him on Twitter here, and follow his journey with the school here. You can also get my notes from Tedx here.

So like I said, that’s just one of our brothers who is doing something amazing, but God has given each of us in the group some amazing gifts and opportunities to use those gifts. It was amazing to spend a weekend with these men, with these brothers, and I look forward to what the next year holds for each of us. But I know one thing for sure, that we won’t be going through it alone, because we are a band of brothers.

So I’ll end this post in the way that I started it.

It’s a rare thing when you find yourself surrounded by friends who are going to be there for life. We may be spread out all over the world, but to know that they are always going to be there, that is truly amazing.
