  • Leaders get in slumps.
  • Sometimes there are problems that seem like they can’t be solved.
  • Leaders move people from here to there
  • You must be able to stand in front a group of 3, or 30, or 300, or 3,000 and say “We are here, but someday by God’s grace, if we link-up, and persevere we are going to end there.
  • What do you do when people say, “I’m staying here.“?
  • Don’t make there sound wonderful, the first play is to make here sound awful!
  • Staying here breaks the heart of God
  • Your job is not to preserve something from its gradual demise
  • You job is to figure out what God wants done in this world, what your role is, and then move people from here to there.
  • It takes fantastic people to from here to there. You can’t do it alone.
  • One of the greatest joys of leadership, is the assembling together of teams of fantastic people.
  • Character
  • Competence
  • Chemistry
  • He wrote about these in his book Axiom
  • Culture
  • What kind of person flourishes on our team?
  • Will they fit in with our unique culture? Or might they be a better fit in another church or organization?
  • We offer them a mission to lay their lives down for.
  • Attract, develop, and maintain people that will flourish in your unique culture.
  • The holy challenge of developing a team of fantastic people.
  • Do you see this as a leadership fundamental?
  • Do you view this as a privilege?
  • Have you defined your culture?
  • 3rd leadership fundamental – Mile Markers and Celebrations
  • How do you inspire people to stay on the journey?
  • Where on the journey are people most vulnerable.
  • Its not on the early stages, out of the box there is some energy, and when you’re almost there it is exciting. It is in the middle of the journey where it becomes perilous, and if you’re not careful, you could lose the whole thing.
  • It is along the way when it gets really hard.
  • Refill your vision bucket.
  • Everyone’s vision bucket leaks.
  • If you feel things getting soft, you need to refill the vision bucket.
  • You have to celebrate every mile marker you possibly can on the way to the destination, even if you have put them in arbitrarily.
  • What keeps people on the journey is a sense of hope that they’re going to get there someday.
  • You have to mark these stages on progress, and cheer them on.
  • Turn a setback into a celebration mile marker.
  • Most experts would say there is a 40% differential in productivity between an inspired teammate or office worker, and one who is uninspired.
  • Jesus would monitor the inspiration level of his followers. He knew that inspiration matters. He might take his followers onto a boat, or on a retreat to the mountains.
  • When was the last time you threw a party for not just the destination, but some progress along the way?
  • 4th leadership fundamental – Whispers from God
  • You must hear from God in the process.
  • John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice and they heed it.”
  • The primary way God speaks to us is through His Word.
  • Every leader must be an incurable reader of The Bible.
  • God speaks to us directly by His Spirit.
  • He puts thoughts in our minds that are not our thoughts.
  • Do you believe that God still speaks today?
  • If you felt God was transmitting to you on a regular basis, how concerned would you be with the quality of your antenna?
  • Will you do everything in your power to hear God’s voice and heed it?
  • Don’t Quit
  • Whispers:
    • Don’t Quit
    • Step Up
    • Take the Risk
    • Apologize Now
    • Make the tough decision
    • Get help
    • Stop running from God
    • Slow down
    • Show your heart
    • Let others lead
    • Feed your soul
    • Bless the team
    • Make the ask
    • Do something more impactful
    • Come clean
    • Embody the vision
    • Celebrate the victories
    • Speak the truth
    • Pay the price
    • Count your blessings
    • End the secret
    • Check your motives
