App of the Week – Hootsuite

If you’re running social media for your church, you may manage 2 or more social media accounts on a daily basis. This could include Twitter and Facebook for both your church and yourself personally. It won’t take you long to realize that managing all of this can be madness if you don’t have the right tools to help you out.

That’s where Hootsuite comes in.

What is Hootsuite?

Hootsuite is a social media management tool that functions in Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Foursquare, LinkedIn, and WordPress. I know, it’s hard to imagine one tool to help you manage all of those things, but Hootsuite gets the job done.

From Hootsuite’s Feature Page…

Save your time and your sanity. Improve productivity by managing all of your social networks within HootSuite. The dashboard is designed for you and your team to listen, engage and measure all from one simple interface.

5 Reasons you should use Hootsuite to manage your church’s social media

  1. Post Scheduling – If you’re using social media for your church correctly then it can get a bit cumbersome to keep posts straight, and always knowing where they’re going. With Hootsuite you can schedule posts by day and time within the platform you choose (Twitter, Facebook, etc.). This allows you to maximize the functionality of each network by using each one correctly without having to worry about cross-posting. To give you an idea of the capacity of the tool, some months may even look like this…
  2. Stream Management – You can see what is going on in all of your streams of social networks simultaneously. You can also setup different columns for custom searches or hashtags. For example, when someone checks-in at Park on Foursquare and it goes to their Twitter, it doesn’t mention our Twitter handle, but the tweet will say “Park Community Church Chicago”. So I setup a column that does a search for those terms, that way I can greet anyone who checks-in on Foursquare.
  3. Team Management – An awesome feature that I haven’t even begun to explore is Team Management within Hootsuite. This feature allows you to have multiple team members connected and managing different social networks. So you can collaborate and easily work together as you plan out your social media strategy.
  4. Mobile App – The desktop app is the one that I use most often, but what makes this tool even more awesome is that it has a fully functional mobile app as well! All of the scheduling and stream management functionality is still present in this app, so you can continue to strategize even when you’re on the move.
  5. Price – What I think I love most about Hootsuite is the price. You can signup for as little as ZERO DOLLARS and manage up to 5 social networks. If you find that 5 profiles isn’t enough, then you can upgrade to Hootsuite Pro for only $10/month, and you get unlimited profiles, along with Google Analytics, and Facebook Insights integration! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

I will say that I usually only use Hootsuite for Twitter now. It has been discovered that if you use third-party tools to schedule posts for Facebook then you will get lower reach and visibility. So I use Facebook Pages’ scheduling functionality to post there. But if you’re managing multiple Twitter accounts for your church this tool is a lifesaver. You can checkout and register for Hootsuite here.

Do you schedule your social media posts?

Have you used Hootsuite or some other tools to do it?
